Live to Laugh, Laugh to Live: Comedy Day Celebrates Its 31st Free Show

San Francisco’s Comedy Day, Sunday, September 18, 2011 - Noon till 5 pm - Sharon Meadow, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco; Admission: Free - 1 Stage • 5 Hours • 40 Comedians • A Million Laughs • Absolutely Free

San Francisco, CA, May 12, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Comedy Day presents five hours of free comedy starting at noon, Sunday, September 18 at Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park.

Comedy Day is borrowing Milton Berle’s famous quote, “Live to laugh, and laugh to live.” But the late “Thief of Bad Gags” wouldn’t mind…he was upfront about how he amassed one of the largest joke collections in the world. But Berle’s quote lends itself to the 31st annual free Comedy Day at Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park on Sunday, September 18, because once again, the original outdoor comedy festival is helping to build awareness for the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and their mission to eradicate lung cancer.

Comedy Day’s partnership with the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation is a perfect fit. Two years ago, Comedy Day’s founder Jose Simon passed away from lung cancer. As a living memorial to Jose, we continue to present the gift of laughter, which studies have shown reduces pain and stress, eases auto-immune diseases and improves the activity of natural killer cells. But the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation goes one better than Comedy Day by actually providing the necessary funding to help find a cure.

This year’s lineup features a combination of up-and-coming talent, Bay Area favorites and national headliners. “You never know who’s gonna drop in,” hints Debi Durst, Board President and Executive Producer of Comedy Day. “It’s been a brutal year; now more than ever we need a good laugh,” she continues. “Comedy Day guarantees that the comedians presented will be able to find the funny in the economy, the upcoming elections, even natural disasters." And Durst knows at least one guy personally who’ll skewer the politicians.”

The complete cast of comedians will be announced in August, and updates will be made to ComedyDay.com. Also on tap is the Stand-up Comedy Legend Award, given each year to a comedian who has excelled at the craft of comedy. Past winners include Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello), Wavy Gravy, Pat Morita, Pat Paulsen, Robin Williams and Will Durst.

Founder Jose Simon’s dream of a free, open-air comedy celebration became a reality in 1981. Since that time, nearly three-quarters of a thousand of the world’s funniest comedians have performed gratis for more than a half-million happy people. Comedy Day has hosted many of the biggest names in stand-up, among them Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Dave Chappelle, Greg Giraldo, Garry Shandling, Ellen DeGeneres, Eddie Izzard, Dana Carvey, Paula Poundstone, Rob Schneider, George Lopez, Margaret Cho, Dave Attell, Arj Barker, Brian Regan, Jake Johannsen, Patton Oswalt, Janeane Garofalo, Carlos Alazraqui and more.

Comedy Day will arrange access to comedians for media representatives seeking interviews and broadcast appearances. A media kit is available at http://www.comedyday.com/media.php. Acts are subject to change. Comedy Day is rated PG-13.

Additional sponsors include NBC Bay Area, San Francisco Examiner, Classic Rock KFOX 98.5 FM, SF Weekly, KGO News Radio, Gordon Biersch, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Joie de Vivre Hotels, Nob Hill Pizza, San Francisco Park & Rec Department, and novelty T-shirt source Nerdkungfu.com.

Comedy Day is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) event that has turned into a long-standing tradition in San Francisco. Heavily supported by the leading Bay Area media companies, the event has attracted more than 60,000 attendees in a single day. Contributions to Comedy Day help in three ways:

1) Supporting the production of each year’s annual event;
2) Providing an outreach program consisting of workshops teaching conflict resolution through the use of humor to Bay Area public schools;
3) Presenting comedic entertainment to patients at hospitals, nursing homes, hospices and wherever people can use a good laugh.
