Young Marine Tells Story of His Tour in Vietnam in New Release; Book by James Oyster, Released by Dog Ear Publishing
Marion, OH, May 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- This is the moving personal account of one man’s experience of the horrors of war, focusing on the 77-day siege of Khe Sanh, South Vietnam. The memoir, told through a series of diary entries the author wrote from Nov. 15, 1967, to May 29, 1968, offers a first-person view of life as an infantryman struggling to keep himself and those around him alive. Photos Oyster took document daily life of Marines serving a world away from their homes.
Moving Trees, published by Dog Ear Publishing, begins with the 20-year-old’s trip from his family’s West Virginia farm and follows him through the hot, steamy jungles of Vietnam to the final injury that sends him home. Readers can relive his courage at facing another day and mourn with him as he holds a dying fellow Marine. Small luxuries like hot chow and showers mean the world to men living from day to day. Oyster holds nothing back, whether it’s descriptions of R&R, impatience about getting back to the action or fear when the enemy starts shooting. Although the young Marine survives the war, it changes him forever.
Author James Oyster received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with Valor as a Marine during the Battle of Khe Sanh and other engagements during the Vietnam War. During his tour, Oyster served as a fire team leader, squad leader, right guide, platoon sergeant and platoon commander. He spent eight months at Bethesda Naval Hospital recovering from his injuries. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he taught middle school and high school and served as principal and coach during an educational career that has lasted almost 40 years.
