Sallas Auto Repair's Guide for Preparing Your Vehicle for Summertime Road Trips

How to prevent roadside breakdowns and auto repairs while traveling.

Kansas City, MO, June 05, 2011 --(PR.com)-- When planning a road trip this summer, it’s important to inspect your entire vehicle before hitting the highway. From the engine to the tail pipe, make sure to check out every car part to avoid roadside breakdowns and costly auto repairs. Nick Sallas of Sallas Auto Repair is a Master Certified Technician and has several recommendations for summertime travelers.

“Travelers planning on using personal vehicles for road trips this summer need to make sure they’ve had a proper car inspection,” said Nick Sallas of sallasauto.com in Kansas City, MO. “A long trip puts stress on a vehicle and causes many problems if a car is not fine-tuned and maintained before traveling long distances.”

Checking Under Your Hood
Before heading out on a long trip, make sure the additional mileage of the trip does not take you over your oil change mileage. Check your oil, and if you’re close to 3,000 miles since your last oil change, go ahead and change your oil. If you have a newer car, consider using synthetic oil. This will preserve your engine and give you better gas mileage, especially if your car has less than 70,000 miles. As you’re traveling, keep your gas tank at least 1/8 full at all times to prevent damaging the fuel pump. Also, check the fluid levels for all car parts, from the transmission to the wiper blades. To practice the utmost safety, make sure an auto technician inspects your transmission and flushes any old fluids to prevent overheating.

“The transmission gets really hot on road trips, and especially when towing a camper or boat. Making sure the transmission is in good shape is top priority,” said Sallas.

Care For Your Tires
It’s also critical that you have safe tires on your vehicle when traveling on summer road trips. Tires need to have a good tread and be aired up completely. Nick even recommends inflating the tires within 5 PSI of the max number on the side to improve gas mileage. Make sure your tires have been balanced and rotated to ensure a safe drive.
