The period of minstrel entertainment in America is one that creates as much confusion as deserved applause. The origins of blackface minstrelsy in America begin when northern white performers began to put “burnt cork” makeup on their faces and supposedly recreate the recreational activities of southern plantation Negroes. The confusion deepens as black performers start using the “burnt cork” makeup and not only emulate, but try to outdo their white counterparts.

The question is: What made some blackface minstrels authentic and others not? What were the other performance avenues that became available to Blacks because of this forgotten period of performance?
