Consuming Desire: Photographs by Muema, First Online Profile of This Never Before Seen Body of Work, on View for the Month of June 2011

New York, NY, June 06, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The first online exhibition of Muema’s photographic series, Consuming Desire, explores sex and money, race and class, myth and fantasy and is on view in Fraction Magazine, issue 27, Not Safe for Work, June 2011.

The images in Consuming Desire depict the physical manifestation of desire via photographing the stimulus (male strippers) and corresponding response (the women that desire them). Muema views the images as part of a broader conversation on relaxed sexual attitudes, particularly in our current society.

Fraction Magazine features the best of contemporary photography, bringing together diverse bodies of work by established and emerging artists from around the globe. Each monthly on-line issue focuses on a central theme, creating an implicit dialogue between differing photographic perspectives.

The color images depict pumped up, well hung, black men, in thongs, G-strings and construction boots, writhing to the (predominantly) black and Hispanic, women that love them. Photographed at an undisclosed location in a working class outer borough of New York City, these images challenge the myths that women don’t have as much of a sex drive as men or that women are not turned on by watching naked men.

Muema is a visual artist who has lived in Nairobi, Moscow, Paris and now New York City. He attended Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. From an early age he was influenced by Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, David LaChapelle and Jeff Koons. Among his contemporaries, he cites Matthew Barney, Hank Willis Thomas and John Currin as influences.

Following 9/11, Muema moved from TriBeCa in lower Manhattan to BoCoCa, Brooklyn (the convergence of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and Carol Gardens). Through his time in Brooklyn, and through word of mouth, his four year journey to gain access to this illicit world began.
