New Exhibitions on view at the Erie Art Museum:
The Gift of Music, Bacon Gallery
This exhibition is drawn from a significant gift to the permanent collection of photographs that explore the world of music, from Philip Glass to the Rolling Stones, Eubie Blake to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Gift of Music was organized by New York photographer Tom Caravaglia, who arranged for donations from a group of accomplished photographers that includes several former Caravaglia students.
Featured artists include celebrity photographer Serge Balkin, fashion/portrait photographer Barbara Bordnick, jazz impresario and photographer Hank O’Neal and the founder of the Camera 5 agency, Ken Regan. One of the best known rock photographers of the 1960s and 70s, Bob Seidemann, and contemporary music photographer Justin Borucki provide images of great rock musicians from Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead to Rihanna, Chris Cornell (of the bands Audioslave and Soundgarden), The Mars Volta, and guitarist John Frusciante (formerly of the Red Hot Chili Peppers).
Originally from Erie, Tom Caravaglia studied photography in New York City with Alexy Brodavitch and Bernice Abbott. Throughout five decades of work, he has focused on the performing arts, most notably dance and theater. He has worked with many distinguished dance companies, including Alvin Nikolais Dance Theater, Murray Louis Dance Company, and Paul Taylor Dance Company.
Archaic Revival: Works by Gary Spinosa, Ronald E. Holstein Gallery
Inspired by ancient artwork and its spiritual connections, Gary Spinosa’s sculptural works reflect both the knowledge he has gathered over the past four decades and the passion he brings to the creative process.
It is impossible to fully appreciate Gary Spinosa’s work without seeing it in person. Its raw spirituality draws the viewer in. At first glance, it may appear simple, yet it is intricately detailed; on every level, it is designed to make you take a second, third, fourth look and to step back and think. There is a certain tactile aspect to it, especially in his smaller porcelain works. To hold one of these in your hands is to truly discover it, surface by surface and to encounter its uniqueness in full measure.
The works for this show are all newly finished. Some are entirely new; others were started as many as forty years ago and have been slow works in progress for Spinosa in his garage-turned-studio and dining room-turned-workshop. Many of his beautiful, small porcelain pieces are on display, alongside larger sculptural works and two-dimensional rubber stamp art. The variety of works is reflective of Spinosa’s own interests; he is an avid collector of art and natural curiosities that provoke his deep interest in things spiritual. The result is work that is deeply personal to Spinosa’s tastes and aesthetics but easily approachable by all audiences.
Gary Spinosa is a full-time self-employed artist. He has exhibited internationally and locally, including a retrospective titled “Gary Spinosa: The Philosopher’s Stone,” at Edinboro University in 2007. His works are included in numerous public and private collections, including the Butler Institute of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art.
All events during gallery night are family-friendly and free to the public. The e-Bayliner trolley offers free transportation for gallery-hoppers. A trolley schedule is available at erieartmuseum.org.
