One World Trekking Confirms Inaugural Trek Into Bhutan’s Merak and Sakteng Region

Join One World Trekking on one of the first groups to search for the elusive Yeti in remote eastern Bhutan.

Aspen, CO, June 05, 2011 --(PR.com)-- One World Trekking, a leader in Himalayan travel since 1988, has confirmed their September 25 to October 5, 2011 departure into the recently-opened and very little-traveled Merak & Sakteng region of eastern Bhutan. Trekking guide and professional photographer Charles Engelbert will escort a small group of adventurous souls on a trekking route into a land known for its unique culture and prime Yeti habitat.

“This will surely be a truly incredible cultural journey and nature hike into a region of Bhutan previously closed to the outside world,” notes One World Trekking owner Andy Crisconi. The Merak and Sakteng region has been closed to protect the unique cultural heritage of the Brokpa people and in part to give the mythical Yeti some peace, whose tales of wandering in these secluded valleys are very popular among the locals.

The 6-day trek will visit the Merak and Sakteng valleys and enters the pristine Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, which is one of nine protected areas in Bhutan. The Sanctuary was initially created to protect the elusive Megay, or yeti. Other wildlife living in the Sanctuary includes the snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan black bear, barking deer and Himalayan red fox. According to the surveys conducted by the World Wildlife Fund, the Sakteng Sanctuary is home to some 203 species of plants, 119 species of birds and 18 species of mammals.

This brand new Bhutan hiking vacation begins and ends in Delhi, India and combines a unique opportunity to travel overland into a remote eastern corner of the "Land of the Thunder Dragon." On the trek, group members will be afforded an opportunity to see, first hand, a way of life that has remained unchanged over centuries.
