Lafayette Area High School Soccer Players Ready for FC Indiana Home Debuts

Lafayette, IN, June 07, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Three local players, Maya Reyes of Jefferson HS, Mirea Whitaker of West Lafayette HS and Ryly Bugay of Harrison HS are set to make FC Indiana home debuts this Wednesday. FC Indiana, two time Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) and two time US Open Cup national champions will host Carmel United women’s team on Wednesday at Scheumann Stadium, 7PM kickoff.

FC Indiana is a powerhouse in women’s soccer with 10 former FC Indiana players named to six national team rosters for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany, June 26 – July 17.

No other club in the world has that many former players on World Cup rosters. Since 2005, 39 players from 16 countries have played for FC Indiana. This season FC Indiana roster includes players from USA, Jamaica and Ghana and features Lizzy Cudjoe who scored three goals at the 2010 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup (including 1 goal against the US), Katie Kelly who played last season in Sweden, Tanesia Vassell captain of Jamaica, and Melissa Cary who played last three seasons in Italy.

So how do Lafayette area players enjoy practicing against and playing with such experienced internationals?

"I love it. I want to play so badly, this is a totally different level from high school or club play. It is faster, stronger and it makes me improve,” said Bugay, a sophomore to be at Harrison HS.

Maya Reyes of Jefferson HS says that “training with this team is amazing and getting any playing time will be so exciting.” Mirea Whitaker, who will be a junior at West Lafayette this fall, stated, she got used to physical differences but it’s the tactical understanding she is working to. “Here the coaches constantly emphasize where you should be and what you should be doing at any given moment. We work on the quality of our first touch and timing of
our runs.”

Many of the current players aspire to be like Aivi Luik of Australia who joined FC Indiana for five seasons, made Australia national team squad, won the Asian Women’s Championship last year and now will be going to the World Cup in Germany with the Aussies. “I owe a lot of my tactical aspect of football to playing with FC Indiana. Under Polish coach Shek Borkowski, (former professional) I learnt a lot about the game and got very fit with his twice-a-day no slacking sessions. The WPSL itself was filled mostly with physical and direct teams. FC Indiana was made up of a lot of foreign players. It was much more technical and tactical,” said Luik in a recent interview with ‘Australia Football’ magazine.

Two other local players Corie Moore (a teacher at Tecumseh Junior HS) and Jessy Havrilesko have played with FC Indiana since 2007 and helped the team to international wins over women’s national teams of Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico and Canada. Havrilesko’s parents own ‘Char-Bett Drive In’ in Logansport.

FC Indiana is currently in second place in WPSL Midwest South division with a 2-1 record.
