“Son Up” Takes Top Honors in Cinequest 17 Screenwriting Competition

Screenplay places first out of 461 submissions.

Santa Monica, CA, March 17, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Screenwriters Andrew Shearer and Nicholas Sherman’s original screenplay “Son Up” took first place in the 2007 Cinequest Film Festival screenplay competition. “Son Up” is the story of a teenage graffiti artist struggling to keep out of juvenile hall, while his loyalties to his gang threaten to send him straight to prison.

The feature screenplay won first place out of 461 submitted to the Cinequest 17 Screenwriting competition back in November 2006. Shearer and Sherman waited almost two months before finding out that their collaborative work was among the top ten. They were given two weeks to make revisions to the script, and then re-submitted it for final judging.

“Winning first prize in anything is hard, especially in the arts where the judging is so subjective.  It truly is an honor to have our script chosen among all the others by such a distinguished and creative group of industry professionals,” says Sherman.

Shearer and Sherman also have a short version of “Son Up,” which has been the recipient of several festival awards including Best Student Film (Cinequest) and Best Director for Shearer (WTIFF Norway). It was also a Regional Finalist for the Student Academy Awards.

Both are managed by Mack Muse Entertainment in Santa Monica.
