Stevens Institute of Technology 2011 Commencement
On May 26th, Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ celebrated the Class of 2011 with Commencement activities on Castle Point.
Hoboken, NJ, June 10, 2011 --(PR.com)-- On May 26, Stevens Institute of Technology bid a proud farewell to undergraduate and graduate students of the Class of 2011 at the 139th Commencement. The ceremonies on May 26th concluded a week of events starting with receptions for graduating students hosted by Dr. George P. Korfiatis, Provost and University Vice President, on May 20th. Preceding the University Commencement exercises were the Doctoral hooding ceremonies on May 25th.
Since 1870, Stevens has been a broad-based academic institution with its robust programs today represented by the School of Engineering and Science, the School of Systems and Enterprises, the School of Technology Management, and the College of Arts and Letters. The 139th Commencement celebrated Stevens undergraduate and graduate students gathered on Castle Point to receive their diplomas for Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees.
Graduation comes as not only a milestone for students, but also a landmark event in the life of a University. This year, Stevens celebrated its largest-ever and most diverse class of outstanding graduate students, representing some 50 countries and consisting of 30% women. Stevens honored its first NCAA champion, a major milestone for growing athletic programs. 2011 also saw the appointment of Stevens eighth President, Dr. Nariman Farvardin, who will begin in his new role on July 1.
Stevens also celebrated the lifetime achievements of members of the internal and extended University community. Dr. Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan, Vice Chancellor of the National University of Malaysia, received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering for her leadership role in developing educational, research, and entrepreneurship programs that impact the lives of students throughout Malaysia.
Distinguished Stevens alumnus Sandeep Mathrani, CEO of General Growth Properties, received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree for his achievements over a twenty-year career in real estate.
Dr. George P. Korfiatis, Provost and University Vice President of Stevens, received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering for his contributions to environmental research and technology as well as his 28 years of service to the University.
Stevens Distinguished Artist in Residence Carlos Alomar received an Honorary Bachelor of Arts degree for his trailblazing musical career and commitment to pioneering the use of digital technology to revolutionize music production.
