Clark Hipolito Unveils New "Five Points" Mural

Raleigh artist recreates his original mural to reflex new shop ambience

Clark Hipolito Unveils New "Five Points" Mural
Raleigh, NC, March 19, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Clark Hipolito, the artist who gave the Five Points neighborhood its original mural on the former Village Antique’s wall facing Glenwood Avenue, has painted over that bit of urban art and recently unveiled his new mural: a gateway, of sorts, to the historic community.

According to Hipolito, the more vibrant colors of the original mural (reds, blues, greens) didn’t complement the refined nature of the new store in the location. POSH! Shoppes’ palette is inspired by the antique European furnishings, accessories and other items it carries, which tend to be neutral in tone: whites, crèmes, gilded golds, and black.

“That was the main reason the original mural had to go,” he said. “Too much color.”

But while the new mural may be more in harmony with the POSH! interior, you won’t see the name of the store on it.

“Knowing that the Five Points community was very attached to the original mural, and that it was a highly visible designation for the community, Patricia [Jacoby, who owns POSH!] commissioned me to re-do the mural in a way that would be more in line with POSH! but more about Five Points,” Hipolito explained. “With that in mind, we opted not to include the store name in the mural, but rather the words ‘Five Points.’”

In “one quick, creative session,” Hipolito said, he and Jacoby came up with the “gateway scrollwork theme” and neutral color palette. He completed the work in four days.

“Generally, a lot more planning is involved in creating a mural,” the artist said. “But since we were trying to meet a one-week deadline before their grand opening, we were in a hurry-up mode.”
