Augustinians of the Western Province Donate to Villanova Preparatory School
Ventura, CA, June 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- In an effort to make a Catholic education more accessible to students of varying means, the Augustinians of the Western Province have made a $25,000 donation to the Scholarship Endowment at Villanova Preparatory School.
This donation comes on top of several partial scholarships that the Province funds annually so that families can close the tuition gap for their deserving students. Villanova President Rev. Greg Heidenblut, O.S.A. donates back a significant portion of his salary each year to the school.
“I am so pleased that we Augustinians can come together to support our students and perpetuate the vision of St. Augustine in Catholic education,” said VPS President Rev. Greg Heidenblut, O.S.A.
Villanova is a diverse community of teachers, students, and parents who support and challenge one another in their learning and study, said Rev. Heidenblut.
“We need the diversity of experience, faith and perspectives that enrich the life of the school and its mission to educate young people,” Rev. Heidenblut said.
He asked the Province for the donation in June when the Augustinians were convened for a retreat on the Villanova campus. Using the example of the “Adopt-A-Student” scholarship program at VPS which is a direct mail fundraising campaign that raises about $10,000 annually, he told them that given the tough economy more families in 2011 cannot afford to send their students to Villanova.
“I told them that our annual goal for the Adopt-A-Student program is $50,000 which would allow us to provide 10, $5,000 scholarships,” he said. “Alternately we can build the Father John Glynn, O.S.A. Scholarship Endowment to $1 million which would accomplish the same goal.”
The Fr. John Glynn, O.S.A. Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance to students from families who demonstrate financial need. Each year about 40 percent of the students receive financial assistance of some kind to attend Villanova. Many promising young scholars, however, cannot enroll based on their inability to pay. For fall 2011 there were 18 such day students.
“Villanova’s student and staff are thus deprived of the rich culture and contributions these students could add to our community,” said Rev. Heidenblut. “If we cannot extend financial assistance to more students of varying means, then they, and we, lose.”
About Father John Glynn, O.S.A.
Father Glynn was ordained in 1939 and spent 19 years at St. Augustine High School in San Diego where he taught and coached several varsity sports. He was assigned to Villanova in 1959 and was headmaster twice from 1960- 1965 and from 1975-79. While at Villanova he oversaw expansion of the campus which included building the girls dormitory which bears his name. He finished his career at Villanova where he taught Latin and religion.
The presence of many Villanova and Saint Augustine High School alumni at his funeral and memorial Masses in Ojai and San Diego spoke volumes about the effect he had upon them, which will carry on for generations.
