NAPNAP Submits Comments to FDA Regarding Dosing of Nonprescription Medications for Children

Cherry Hill, NJ, June 23, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Today the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners’ (NAPNAP) submitted comments to the FDA’s Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee and the Pediatric Advisory Committee regarding dosing of nonprescription medications for children.

Inaccurate dosing of over-the-counter medications is a high-risk factor for both under-dosing and over-dosing in infants, toddlers and young children. Dosing errors by parents and caregivers continue to prevail and contribute to pediatric morbidity and mortality.

NAPNAP strongly supports the FDA’s plan to improve acetaminophen dosage information for children younger than 2 years of age. The current lack of information on medication labels for children under the age of 2 has contributed to confusion by parents, potentially leading them to incorrectly dose their child. Also, a key component to improving acetaminophen labeling is that medication dosages are only based on children’s weight, rather than age alone, or both age and weight.

NAPNAP supports that all instructions and labels on OTC medications should contain provider-inclusive language using the term “healthcare provider” rather than “doctor” or “physician.”
