Divorce Rates Decrease as "Separation Deed Polls" Grow in Popularity

As new figures launched by the Office for National Statistics show that the number of divorces in England and Wales during 2009- the latest year published- has dramatically decreased, a leading name change provider has seen a 25 per-cent increase in the number of people changing their names by Deed Poll as a direct result of a separation.

London, United Kingdom, June 24, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The new report from the Office for National Statistics found that divorce rates fell to 113,949, a 6.4 per-cent decrease since 2008 when there were 121,708, divorces filed, but The Legal Deed Poll Service, the UK’s leading Deed Poll provider claims that a new separation trend is in fact taking place.

Tina Clough from The Legal Deed Poll Service said: “Although the National Statistics indicate that less people in England and Wales are actually getting divorced, we are inundated with applications from individuals who simply can not afford to get a divorce in the current economic climate and are instead opting to merely change their names until their financial situation improves.

“We are finding that many women contact us because although they have not filed for a divorce, they wish to have their maiden names back in an attempt to regain some understanding of who they once were before they tied the knot, and for many of them this is vitally important.”

If you are getting divorced and wish to revert to your maiden name, some official bodies and organisations will accept a decree absolute plus marriage certificate as evidence of the change, but some organisations require a Deed Poll as proof of the name change. Its common practice for financial institution is such as mortgage lenders or the banks to ask for this official documentation.

Tina added: “Obtaining a Deed Poll document is the easiest and safest way of ensuring that all official bodies will accept your change of name. It is even possible to change your title back from ‘Mrs’ to ‘Miss’ and the Deed Poll application form will include a section enabling you to change your title.

“Despite popular belief, it is in fact possible to change your name back to your maiden name before your divorce is finalised, or if you simply cannot afford to file for a divorce in the first place. We receive thousands of enquiries from women who think that because they are not officially divorced, it is impossible to change their names back again, but this simply isn’t the case.”
