Dexter Industries Releases Thermal Infrared Sensor for the LEGO MINDSTORM
LEGO MINDSTORM’s First Thermal Infrared Sensor
Stafford, VA, June 25, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Dexter Industries, a leader in LEGO MINDSTORMS sensors, announces the release of their Thermal Infrared Sensor for the LEGO MINDSTORMS system. This sensor is the first inertial thermal infrared sensor for the MINDSTORMS system.
The Dexter Industries Thermal Infrared Sensor reads surface temperatures of objects. It is a non-contact thermometer based on the MLX90614. Detecting the infrared radiation from an object, the sensor can read object temperatures between -90°F and 700°F (-70°C and +380°C). The sensor has a high accuracy of 0.5°C and a resolution of 0.02°C.
The Thermal Infrared Sensor reads both the ambient temperature (the temperature of the air around the sensor) and the surface temperature of the object that the sensor is pointed towards.
The sensor can detect a flame at a range of 2 meters.
Dexter Industries developed this sensor in response to a demand from the RoboCup Jr. Rescue Competition. The competition requires students in STEM programs to build robots to navigate a maze and find warm “victims.” The sensor was originally designed to help students sense and find the warm victims. Dexter Industries also expects the sensor to be popular with STEM programs using robotics in the classroom, in particular LEGO MINDSTORMS systems.
Dexter Industries is a manufacturer of advanced sensors and peripherals for the Mindstorms NXT system. The company produces a wide range of sensors for education and hobbyists. Their offerings include solar power systems, a GPS guidance system, and pressure temperature sensors for the Mindstorms NXT system.
