American Board of Addiction Medicine Approves Addiction Medicine Associates’ Training Program for Physicians
Certification in addiction medicine training will help increase number of addiction medicine specialists
Brookline, MA, June 30, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Addiction Medicine Associates today announced that the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) has approved the organization to offer a one-year training program in addiction medicine for physicians. The first physician has been accepted into the program and will be starting in the summer of 2011. Once training is successfully completed, the physician will be able to take the board examination in December 2012. According to Dr Wendel Price, the physician selected for the program, “The training of Primary Care physicians does not get into addiction treatment to any real degree and a comprehensive training program would be invaluable”
“Addiction Medicine Associates is greatly pleased to receive approval from ABAM, which will allow us to train a physician in the coming year,” said Dr. Punyamurtula S. Kishore, president of Addiction Medicine Associates. “We have been working with healthcare practitioners and hospitals to provide continuing education through workshops and core curriculum on all aspects of addiction care, and ABAM’s approval allows us to expand our work and enhance the impact we can make in the field of addiction medicine.”
The approval by ABAM for the Addiction Medicine Associates’ one-year training program coincides with ABAM’s announcement of a landmark approval for ten nationally accredited addiction medicine residency programs for physicians. Historically, a lack of medical providers has hampered the ability to treat patients. ABAM has conferred board certification on approximately 2500 physicians drawn from 17 medical specialties. In Massachusetts, less than 80 ABAM certified physicians practice addiction medicine.
