Parents as Teachers Welcomes Former Senator Kit Bond to the Board of Directors
St. Louis, MO, July 02, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Parents as Teachers national office is pleased to announce that former United States Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond, a longtime supporter of Parents as Teachers and advocate for families and children, has accepted a seat on its board of directors. Parents as Teachers helps organizations and professionals work with families during the critical early years of a child’s life to ensure they grow up healthy, safe and ready to learn. The board of directors plays a critical role in creating and supporting initiatives that advance the overall Parents as Teachers mission.
“It is an honor to have former Senator Bond join the board and work with us to strengthen Parents as Teachers affiliates around the world,” said Karabelle Pizzigati, president of the Parents as Teachers board of directors. “He played a pivotal role in getting Parents as Teachers off the ground 27 years ago in Missouri, understands the long-term economic benefit of early childhood and parent education, and will be instrumental again in helping to shape the future of our organization.”
Bond, who enrolled his son in the Parents as Teachers home visiting model during the organization’s pilot stage, understands the important role Parents as Teachers plays in strengthening families. Bond has described the support he received from Parents as Teachers as his lifeline, and from this experience he developed a passion for helping children develop and learn. Ultimately, his experiences as a young dad shaped his position on early childhood and parent education throughout his political career.
Bond, currently a partner at Thompson Coburn LLP, served four consecutive terms for Missouri in the United States Senate, from his first election in January 1987 to his retirement in January 2011. Prior to his career in the Senate, Bond served as Missouri’s youngest governor, holding office from 1973-1977 and again from 1981-1985. Through these roles Bond was instrumental in shaping state and federal policy for children, and was a tireless advocate for Parents as Teachers. With his influence, the Missouri General Assembly passed the Early Childhood Education Act to establish the Parents as Teachers program statewide in 1984, a success Bond refers to as his greatest accomplishment as governor, and through his continued advocacy as senator he helped expand Parents as Teachers into a national and international program.
As a member of the board of directors, Bond will bring years of experience in championing the efforts of Parents as Teachers and other programs dedicated to the development of children, as well as a deep understanding of affecting public policy to promote education initiatives. The board meets three times per year to plan, review and set policy that ensures Parents as Teachers’ continuing quality improvement, expansion and responsiveness to the evolving needs of today’s families.
