The proud heritage of Gonzales, Texas is reflected in the people who are descendants of those who buried the town cannon during the Texas Revolution and later dared the Mexican army to "Come and Take it!" during the first skirmish of the war. The town itself was rebuilt on ashes left by Santa Anna as he passed through as he was chasing Sam Houston and the Texas army.
During 2001, members of Texas Documentary Photography Group trekked down Highway 183 from Austin to document the south Texas town of Gonzales. The history and people of Gonzales made it a perfect subject for a photographic exhibition celebrating this historic town. The photographers of the Texas Documentary Photography Group have showcased both the traditions of Gonzales, though the cattle auctions, football games, and daily living, as well as the legends of Gonzales, in a haunted hotel, the historic jail, and the town square. The original work was showcased in an exhibition entitled "Taking Gonzales: A Year in the Life of a Small Texas Town." This exhibition contains both work from that first historic exhibition plus new images highlighting the changing face of this classic Texas town.
The Texas Documentary Photography Group is proud to work in conjunction with the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum to showcase the proud heritage of Gonzales, Texas in this exhibition.

About the Texas Documentary Photography Group
Founded in 1999, Texas Documentary Photography Group began as a small group of documentary and photojournalistic photographers who met to share their passion for photographing the events & people around them. As the group has grown, the mission to advance documentary photography as an agent of positive change remains central to the group's purpose.
Members have participated in the Central Texas Heart Gallery since 2005, helping find homes for foster children through photography. They've worked with the local Humane Society to use photography to promote pet adoption. The group has also documented vanishing Texas small towns, Hurricane Ike, Texas State Parks and other current topics.
The group meets on the second Monday of the month at the Northwest Recreation Center, at 2913 Northland Dr, 1 block east of MoPac on 2222, at 7 p.m. to share information and plan future photography exhibits. Members are mainly from the Austin area, although some reside in Georgetown, Fredericksburg, Canyon Lake and Houston. Exhibits are primarily themed photographic studies that allow photographers to not only expand their techniques but also view the results of fellow members. Visitors are welcome.
