Arizona-Themed Comic by KaraokeFanboy Press Makes Debut at San Diego Comic Con
"Amazing Arizona Comics," a small press comic book series about superheroes and current events in Arizona, will make its debut at the San Diego Comic Con this year.
Phoenix, AZ, July 12, 2011 --(PR.com)-- "Amazing Arizona Comics" will make its debut at the San Diego Comic Con International this year. "Amazing Arizona Comics" is a small press mini-comic book self-published by KaraokeFanboy Press in Phoenix, Arizona about how superheroes would react to real current events in and about Arizona. The San Diego Comic Con is July 20-24, 2011 at the San Diego Convention Center.
Russ Kazmierczak, Jr. is the artist behind KaraokeFanboy Press. He explains, "I moved back to Phoenix from Orange County in January 2010, right when the SB 1070 controversy was in full swing. Other states, including California where I'd just come from, were protesting Arizona. The line was so clearly drawn, and Arizona was so blatantly branded a national villain, that I thought, 'This is the perfect context for a comic book.'"
Kazmierczak created superheroes based on Arizona-specific culture, including Speed Cameron, a living Speed Cameron.
"The series starts when Governor Brewer pulled the plug on the speed cameras last year," Kazmierczak continues. "Speed Cameron was inspired by that. When the speed cameras are dubbed obsolete, Cameron wonders, 'Well, what about me?' It's satirical, but it also dives right into the importance of being a hero."
Kazmierczak is working on his fifth issue and has drawn stories based on SB 1070, the Tempe Town Lake dam burst, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio's celebrity posse.
"I don't know if a local Arizona comic will go over well in San Diego, but it's worth a shot," Kazmierczak concluded. "It's the biggest comic con in the world, and Arizona has made global headlines the last 18 months. Maybe the chemistry will work out."
