Pawn Shop Burglars' Rooftop Break-In Cut Short by Sonitrol's Audio Security System

“Sonitrol didn’t call to tell me there was a break-in, they called to report that there were three people in custody!” Gambardella said. “In my opinion, there’s no one even close to Sonitrol.”

Fort Lauderdale, FL, July 17, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Breaking into a pawn shop through a rooftop vent may have seemed inventive, but the attempt quickly landed three suspects in Fort Lauderdale Police custody earlier this month, thanks to Sonitrol’s audio alarm system technology.

As the burglars tried to pry open a reinforcing cage around the air conditioning vent, their rooftop activity triggered the Sonitrol audio intrusion detection system inside Classic Pawn at 2720 W. Broward Blvd. The burglars pushed on the wire cage and dropped a heavy bar, with no idea every move was being heard. Sonitrol’s central station team notified police. Knowing the incident was verified – not a false alarm -- officers and K-9 support arrived at the scene in just four minutes, according to John Ray, III, President of Sonitrol of Fort Lauderdale.

Police stopped the suspects before they could gain access to the one-story building. One suspect jumped off the roof and was apprehended. The other two were quickly persuaded to climb down.

Shop owner Steve Gambardella said he has relied on Sonitrol’s audio intrusion detection technology for years to protect his facilities in several counties – and to help police stay ahead of burglars’ strategies. Unlike traditional alarm systems that pick up activity only after the burglars get inside, activity on the Sonitrol verified intrusion system opens up a live audio feed. Microphones strategically placed throughout the facility send real time audio to Sonitrol’s central station operators, allowing information to be shared with police while an attempt is still underway.

“Sonitrol didn’t call to tell me there was a break-in, they called to report that there were three people in custody!” Gambardella said. “In my opinion, there’s no one even close to Sonitrol.”
