The Hunger Site Supports Mercy Corps’ Expanded Efforts in Horn of Africa

Seattle, WA, July 21, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Visitors to The Hunger Site can support Mercy Corps’ expanded efforts in the Horn of Africa through the website’s Gifts That Give More (tm). The Hunger Site is part of the GreaterGood Network, a family of websites that provide simple, effective, online ways to directly help people, animals, and the planet.

The Hunger Site’s Gifts That Give More (tm) allow visitors to the website to make donations of $10 to $100 to support specific projects or charities. Because of the ease of use, the program is often the first choice for visitors to provide assistance during times of international disaster. Past support of relief efforts includes more than $100,000 to Mercy Corps for work in Japan following the 2011 tsunami and more than $270,000 to Partners In Health for their operations in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake.

The Horn of Africa donations received through Gifts That Give More (tm) will be distributed by GreaterGood.org to Mercy Corps to fund food, clean water projects, and other support needed. 100% of all Gifts That Give More™ received are donated to charity—The Hunger Site takes no administrative fee and all credit card processing fees are underwritten by the website.

Since 1999, The Hunger Site has contributed more than $1 million to Mercy Corps' efforts to battle world hunger.

Disaster In Horn Of Africa
The United Nations is calling the current food and water shortages in Ethiopia and Somalia "the world’s worst humanitarian disaster." With a severe food crisis impacting more than 10 million people in the Horn of Africa, Mercy Corps is expanding their efforts to provide water, food, and temporary jobs in the area. The organization has worked in this region for many years and currently has teams on the ground to provide assistance.

Current Mercy Corps’ projects include feeding 95,000 people in Ethiopia with emergency food distributions, delivering clean water to more than 55,000 people in eastern Ethiopia, and providing cash-for-work programs in Somalia to help drought-affected families fill vital needs like water, food, and other essentials. Mercy Corps personnel are currently working in Kenya to assess the needs of refugees arriving daily and needing assistance, often having walked for days with literally no possessions or supplies.
