Menard Construction of Mountain Lakes, NJ, Honored for Historic Renovation of Hapgood Home
Mountain Lakes, NJ, July 28, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Menard Construction, specialists in custom home building and historic renovations of Mountain Lakes, was honored with a prestigious Award of Excellence from the Community Builders & Remodelers Association of NJ (CBRA) for the Best Historic Renovation of a 100-year-old Hapgood home.
According to builder Thomas Menard, “The craftsman style residence was originally built by Herbert Hapgood, the renowned developer of numerous Arts and Crafts-style homes in Mountain Lakes. We updated the home to suit its owner’s needs, while still keeping its simplistic and intrinsic beauty and design. We added a two car garage, great room, master suite and a finished basement, which we excavated to reach an eight foot ceiling height. The biggest challenge was to match all of the existing materials used in the original structure. Many of those pieces, such as chestnut, are no longer available, so we utilized the finest products available today, but stained and tweaked coloring and texture to resemble the original.”
Menard pointed out that the exterior included stained, beaded board soffits, real stone veneer and stucco to match the original portion. He adds, “It is our greatest compliment when someone can’t determine where the old home ends and the new addition begins.”
Menard is no stranger to the Hapgood-style of homebuilding. He grew up in a Hapgood home and even owns one today. Menard also utilized his knowledge and expertise in the creation of Hapgood Court, a beautiful collection of classic replica homes on a lovely cul de sac in neighboring Boonton. Each one sold within months of the beginning of construction.
He is proud of the legacy of a Hapgood home and states, “They are a big part of the area’s history and I am honored that by restoring and creating the new collection at Hapgood Court, I am able to keep that heritage alive.”
He adds, “While our homes resemble many of the nostalgic features of Hapgood design, we work closely with home owners to update them to meet today’s lifestyle needs with higher standards of construction, energy efficiency and more space. We create the Hapgood look and feel, but, for example, the exteriors feature durable cultured stone and stucco, and inside select stained oak adorns the floors. There are also a lot of hand applied wood moldings which embellish just about every room.”
This award joins a list of other honors bestowed upon Menard and his firm, which for more than 18 years, have perfected the art of historic renovations and remodeling projects. Among the awards is the Best Green Remodeler Award of Excellence from the Community Builders & Remodelers Association of New Jersey.
