Job Search Site is First to Ban Ads That Discriminate Against Unemployed

A new job website, ReEmployAmerica.com encourages companies to hire the right person for the job, regardless of current employment status.

Boston, MA, July 28, 2011 --(PR.com)-- “Unemployed Does Not Mean Unqualified” is the motto of ReEmployAmerica.com, a new job board that encourages companies to hire the right person for the job regardless of current employment status.

In response to observations like these from the National Employment Labor Project “...U.S. employers of all sizes, staffing agencies and online job posting firms are using recruitment and hiring policies that expressly deny employment to the unemployed—simply because they are not currently working,” a writer and a designer decided to launch ReEmployAmerica.com, the first job search website that expressly bans phrases like “currently employed only,” or “overqualified will not be considered,” in all of its job postings.

ReEmployAmerica.com founder, Melysha Acharya says she had the idea to start the job board after she came across one such exclusionary advertisement. “Seeing a job wanted ad that read ‘unemployed persons will not be considered’ really incensed me,” says Acharya. “I could not believe that such language was legal, but after some research I found out that it was. When you’re unemployed, it can be debilitating to see an array of opportunities that you may be qualified for, but are expressly prohibited from applying to. I want to give people a place to job-search without barriers.”

ReEmployAmerica.com will turn the tables on exclusionary hiring practices and exclude employers who wish to post ads that prohibit candidates from applying. Companies who will consider any qualified candidate regardless of current job status can post an opportunity on the board for a nominal fee, using the secure payment system.

Employers will be free to hire applicants based on their own hiring criteria, however, ReEmployAmerica.com encourages employers to consider even so-called overqualified applicants. All job applicants can sign up, post their resume, search and apply for open opportunities free of charge.

“Organizations who care about their employees, the economy and a positive public image will post on ReEmployAmerica.com. It costs much less than the big job boards and that savings can be reinvested in the company,” says Acharya. “But most importantly, job seekers who are frustrated about applying for jobs they will not even be considered for can rest easy here, knowing they will never again come across an ad that says, 'unemployed need not apply.'”
