Now Available as an ebook: Butterfly Powder and the Mountains of Iowa, by Erich Eipert
Seattle, WA, July 31, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Butterfly Powder and the Mountains of Iowa, Erich Eipert's wry coming of age novel set in the panorama of Iowa farm country, has been released as an ebook available from Amazon (Kindle format), Barnes & Noble and Smashwords. The book is an intricate, character-rich tale of a teen trying to make sense of a world that always seems to deliver him failures instead of triumphs.
Gilbert Perles is a talented underachieving teen who spends his time jotting down pithy observations in his ever-present notebook, scheming to help his friends out of jams, raising his inept parents, running the family farm, underwhelming girls, and contemplating why everything always goes wrong for him. When a sweet girl named Alice stirs his romantic interest and he discovers boldness, everything changes for him and his life gets more complicated. The young man’s problems then multiply as his cousin and long time rival suddenly becomes a fierce underhanded enemy and Gilbert discovers a land fraud conspiracy and the blackmailing of a friend. His intervention costs him both his friend and Alice too. Reeling for want of an explanation that accounts for his endless bad luck, Gilbert’s imagination devises "The Great Schlechter," a minor celestial being whose job it is to test and torment us mortals. When Gilbert unexpectedly triumphs over all his troubles, and even finds another girl just as beautiful as Alice, he accepts this as an apt, storied ending and shelves his Great Schlechter idea. But he is unprepared for the true ending three years later when one last powerful confrontation and a truth await him after he returns from a devastating experience during a stint in Vietnam.
Quoted by permission from a reader review: "A wonderful story of awkwardness, first love and growing up in a small town that is a refreshing escape from today's multitasking, wired world. I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in the development and interaction of the characters in the small town setting. This story would make the next great coming of age film classic, reminiscent of Stand by Me at first and evolving into American Graffiti."
