Forgotten NY Gets a Facelift; Launches Labor Day Weekend

New York, NY, August 04, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Author and local historian Kevin Walsh, in conjunction with the Greater Astoria Historical Society, announces the long anticipated redesign of Forgotten New York (www.forgotten-ny.com), New York City’s premier historical research website. Developed by Panoptic Online Marketing, LLC, the updated site will offer greater interactivity for readers and more sophisticated usage statistics tracking for advertisers. The launch is scheduled for Labor Day.

FNY was developed by Kevin Walsh in 1998. Roaming the city with a camera in hand, Walsh assembled a wealth of photographs and information about the remnants of a New York City of decades past and began to preserve them online. Since its launch in March of 1999, FNY has posted over 1100 pages on topics such as ancient advertising, out-of-the-way neighborhoods, subway station and railroad lines no longer in existence, and well-known—as well as lesser-known—historical sites and cemeteries. A “Street Necrology” section describes street names no longer in use. “You’d Never Believe You’re in NYC” takes the reader to Bronx fishing villages, farms in Queens and the remnants of homes abandoned 150 years ago in Staten Island.

FNY has been profiled in all of NYC's daily newspapers, and was twice named to the Village Voice's “Best of NYC’’ list. It has appeared as a cover story in Time Out New York and has been cited as one of PC Magazine’s Top 99 "Undiscovered" websites. In 2006, HarperCollins published Walsh’s Forgotten New York: Views of a Lost Metropolis (ISBN-13:978-0-06-114502-5 and ISBN-10:0-06-114502-5 hardcover; ISBN-13:978-0-06-075400-6 and ISBN-10:0-06-075400-1 paperback), based on the FNY website. The book is currently in its fifth printing and continues to be a popular favorite.

FNY averages approximately 45,500 unique visitors and 75,000 pageviews each month.
