Free Education Session for Families Facing Dementia Keynote Speaker Jaron L. Winston, M.D. to Speak at The Cottages at Chandler Creek

Round Rock, TX, August 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Cottages at Chandler Creek will host geriatric psychiatry expert Jaron L. Winston, M.D., as he gives an educational lecture about the latest dementia research advancements and treatments Aug. 31 at 4:30 p.m. at The South Cottages at Chandler Creek, 2351 North AW Grimes, Round Rock, Texas, 78665. For more than 20 years, Winston has served Austin-area patients, families, physicians and professional caregivers as the knowledge leader in geriatric psychiatry. As a board certified geriatric and general psychiatrist, Winston previously served as Medical Director of Geriatric Services at St. David’s Pavilion. In addition, Winston founded Senior Adults Specialty Healthcare and a research division called Senior Adults Specialty Research. He often lectures and consults on a local and national level.

Dementia is the loss of mental functions such as thinking, memory and reasoning that is severe enough to interfere with a person’s daily functioning. Dementia is not a disease, but a group of symptoms caused by various diseases or conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or Huntington’s. It’s estimated five to eight percent of all individuals over age 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above 65. About 20 percent of dementia causes can be cured or partially treated, so it is very important individuals are informed and receive a thorough diagnosis.
