Volunteers Coordinate Upcoming Event to Support Orphaned Children in Southern Africa
Dillsburg, PA, August 27, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Registration is now open for the First Annual Forgotten 5K and 1 Mile Mosey, which will be held on the grounds of the West Shore Evangelical Free Church in Mechanicsburg on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 at 9:00 am. All proceeds benefit Forgotten Voices International, a Dillsburg based 501(c)(3) helping children orphaned by AIDS in southern Africa. Prizes are authentic curios brought directly from Zimbabwe, and will be awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three runners in each male and female age group. Run or walk the race in costume and be entered to win an iPad2. Registration information is available at www.Forgotten5k.org.
After learning about the work of Forgotten Voices, Mike Kepko was moved to use his passion for running to make a difference for children in Zimbabwe and Zambia by volunteering to organize a 5K road race. Now a core team of eight people, all volunteers, have coordinated this September 17th event. “I had already been familiar with Forgotten Voices and very impressed with their model of empowering local churches in the communities they serve. The Forgotten5k is the product of my love of running, my desire to help, and my respect for Forgotten Voices,” says Kepko.
The prizes include wooden animal carvings for the top overall male and female finisher, painted wooden bowls for second and third place overall finishers, and small African instruments for first, second, and third place age group finishers. The prizes were handmade by Zimbabwean artists.
Runners who complete the event in costume will be entered into a drawing for an iPad2. Door prizes will also be awarded. Participants in the 5K will receive a tee shirt, and participants in the 1 Mile Mosey will receive a water bottle.
Presbyterian Senior Living, based in Dillsburg, PA, is the primary sponsor of the Forgotten 5K and 1 Mile Mosey. Stephen Proctor, Chief Executive Officer stated, “Presbyterian Senior Living is proud to sponsor the Forgotten Voices 5K. We are humbled by the role that Christian church in Africa is playing in meeting the needs of children orphaned by AIDS. Supporting the work of Forgotten Voices is the best way we know to strengthen the local church to continue to this important work. Sponsoring this event is just one of the ways we can express our gratitude for the blessings of God and reach out to the people of Zimbabwe and Zambia.”
Online registration is now open at www.Forgotten5k.org and race day registration will also be available, beginning at 7:00am on September 17th.
