Presque Isle Downs Receives 161 Nominations for Masters Weekend
Masters Weekend at Presque Isle Downs and Casino features the Presque Isle Mile with a $250,000 purse and the Grade II Masters, which is the premier event of the racing season and will have a $400,000 purse.
Erie, PA, September 09, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Presque Isle Downs & Casino received 80 nominations for the Presque Isle Mile, which will be run on Sept. 9, and 81 nominations for the Grade II Masters, which will be run on Sept. 10.
The races will be limited to twelve starters with two ‘Also Eligibles.’
The Presque Isle Mile has a $250,000 purse and the Grade II Masters, which is the premier event of the racing season, will have a $400,000 purse and features Fillies and Mares 3 years-old and up in a 6 ½ furlong race.
“Having 161 nominations is very good,” said Jim Cornes, Presque Isle Downs and Casino Stakes Coordinator. “This is an extremely popular race because of the timing of the event, the very high purses and the Grade II of the Masters Stakes. The race is also a great prep for the Breeders Cup World Championship.”
Presque Isle Downs and Casino can take pride that the racetrack here attracts the best talent in the nation. The Master’s Stakes have been elevated to a Grade II status in a very short time.
“It’s great to see the big names of horseracing come to Erie to display their talents,” said Cornes. “The horses are the true stars of our sport.”
Last year’s Presque Isle Mile winner, Gayego, who broke the track record in the mile, (1:34.90) continued his journey to the Breeders’ Cup Grade I Dirt Mile. This race is considered one of the key preps for the prestigious stakes conducted in early November each year.
Two of the past best performers in the Grade II Masters, Informed Decision, the 2009 and 2010 Masters winner, and Dubai Majesty, the 2010 second place finisher, have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, which is one of the most eminent events in the horseracing world. This is the most anticipated weekend of the summer for horseracing fans in Erie, Pa.
There are 10 races scheduled for each day of the event instead of the usual eight.
As part of this special weekend the first 500 fans on Friday and Saturday will receive free Smith's hotdogs & Herr's chip. The Parade Street Dixieland Jazz Band is also scheduled to perform both nights. There will also be a live broadcast with Erie’s ESPN Chico Borman on Friday from 3-6 pm.
Post time is 5:30 pm Friday and 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
