Distinctive Remodelers Creates 2 Kitchens in One Orland Park Home
Orland Park, IL, September 13, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Getting two for one is always a thrill for smart shoppers, and Elise and Brian Kroll are no exception. By enlisting the services of Distinctive Remodelers, the Orland Park homeowners were able to get two kitchens for nearly the price of one in their 20-year-old two story home—all in fewer than 40 days.
The Krolls moved into their home back in 2000, but over time had grown disenchanted with their slightly cramped and outdated eat-in kitchen. The center island robbed the room of precious floor space, and a wall separated family and guests from the expansive great room next door. Trying to accommodate a growing family—including three sons and their two dogs—and allow enough elbow room for entertaining their large extended family during parties and get togethers was proving challenging. Additionally, Elise craved more counter space, improved lighting and newer flooring to replace her old hardwoods.
“We were considering moving further south in Orland, but we loved our home and were leery of selling in the current housing market. We were leafing through the paper one day, and discovered an article that described a major kitchen renovation completed by Distinctive Remodelers. We thought, ‘Why not give them a call?’” said Brian, who works in automotive sales and puts a strong emphasis on vendors and partners he can trust.
Elise and her husband dreamed of creating a second kitchen in their basement—one that could also be functional during the upstairs renovation and provide them with an area in which to cook. Hence, it was important to hire a firm that could salvage as much of their outgoing kitchen cabinets and components as possible and reconstruct them into a working kitchen in the lower level. Not only did Nooner and his crew live up to this promise, but they also completed the project in less than 40 days as they said they would.
“Normally, you match your cabinets up to the space you have. But in the lower level, we reverse-engineered things by matching the space to the older cabinets we saved,” said Nooner.
“Originally, we were going to go with birch cabinets in the upstairs kitchen, but we decided to spoil ourselves a little and not worry so much about recouping value for a possible future resale. So we chose two-tone maple custom cabinetry,” Elise said.
The Krolls also opted for brown- and golden-toned granite countertops, new GE appliances, a creme-colored wooden hood over their new cooktop, 12 can lights, a stainless steel double bowl sink, and backsplash with decorative travertine tile. But the highlight of the new kitchen involved removing the wall facing the family room and replacing it with a two-tiered peninsula breakfast bar complete with three stools.
Rounding out the upstairs portion of the project, Nooner’s team also installed a wet bar/wine rack area in the family room, created a continuous new floor between the two rooms, replaced the trim throughout the kitchen, family room and hallways with dark maple wood, and repainted the main level in shades of taupe.
Elsewhere, Distinctive Remodelers implemented granite countertops around the salvaged cabinets in the lower level (while waiting for the granite to arrive, Nooner actually put in temporary plywood countertops, allowing the Krolls to have functional surface areas to prepare meals during construction on their upstairs kitchen). In addition, they reconfigured a wall niche for the family’s new flatscreen TV mounted in the basement. A moisture problem in the master bath was eradicated with the installation of a high-tech fan and new tiles on the ceiling. Fourteen new can lights were added to the family room. And in the backyard, new brick pavers were placed and landscaping was updated.
Elise said she was “amazed by the level of detail, fine finishing and overall quality that Distinctive Remodelers integrated into their home. They were always very accommodating, tidy in cleaning up after each day’s work, and easy to trust. I was nervous about getting our kitchen redone, but it turned out we had nothing to worry about. Bryan and his crew were fantastic.”
