New York, NY, September 15, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The sale includes: property from the Estate of Jack Dempsey, World Heavyweight Champion; a large collection of Newark paintings by Grabach, Gasser and others; a New Jersey inventor’s estate of silver and important jewelry; and a monumental carved ivory figure of St. Peter.
Nye and Company’s September auction will pack a veritable knock-out punch. Among the offering will be furniture from the Estate of Jack Dempsey, the 1920’s Heavyweight Champion of the World. Originally purchased for his late mother, who was an admirer of Oriental furniture, many a famous person sat in his and Mrs. Dempsey’s living room over the years, including Ed Sullivan, Floyd Patterson, Hubert Humphrey, Ronald Reagan, and George Steinbrenner.
A more unusual lot in the auction is an antique carved ivory figure of St. Peter. Delicately rendered with great detail, the Saint stands on a plinth that rests on carved lion supports. A rare survivor carved from a tusk, the sculpture is in a remarkable state of preservation, this piece is conservatively estimated at $2,000-4,000.
An important part of this auction includes a collection of incredible jewelry. For example, the Pair of Fred Joailliers, France, Platinum, Sapphire, and Diamond Tear Drop Form Earrings ($20,000-30,000), the Platinum and Diamond Bracelet containing a total of nearly 56 carats of diamonds ($70,000-90,000), the 8 ¼ carat Pear-shaped Diamond Engagement Ring ($60,000-90,000) and numerous other examples of bracelets, earrings, brooches and more.
Also included in the auction is a German Silver Spatulate Dinner Service for 18 with numerous service pieces, Candelabrum and the American made Centerpiece Bowl weighing an impressive 55 troy ounces ($800-1,200).
Examples of fine art include an oil on canvas of Setters Chasing a Partridge by John Morris (1851-1888) for $3,000-5,000; Nocturnal Maritime Sailing Scene, L. Sutcliffe (English, 1848-1933) for $1,000-1,500. The Nye auction also includes articles from Dunhill, Lalique, Waterford, Cartier, Tiffany, Gorham and more
Nye & Company relocated to Montclair and Bloomfield, New Jersey making them more easily accessible from New York City. John and Kathleen Nye acquired Dawson’s after his long and fruitful Sothebys career.
