The Greater Allen Cathedral Inaugural Parade and Youth and Young Adult Day of Service
Jamaica, NY, September 14, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Keeping with its theme of Transforming Community, the Honorable Reverend Dr. Floyd H. Flake and The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York officially invites you to attend Youth and Young Adult Service Day and Inaugural Parade. Elected officials, Queens Elite Marching Band, Girl Scouts, Color Guards, Greek letter organizations, students from Allen Christian School and Wilberforce University Alums are expected to march in Greater Allen Cathedral’s 1st Inaugural Parade.
On Saturday, September 17th, the Legacy Continue as Youth and Young Adults from the tri-state area partake in a day of service. The day will include a massive clean up of Baisley Pond Park; serve lunch to residents currently residing at the Jamaica YMCA and a Back to School Drive. School supplies will be donated to children whose parents are incarcerated. “It is important that our young people understand the value in giving back to our community,” says Flake. “I want my legacy to be that I built sustainable lives, empowered many people, developed institutions that will be able to deliver goods and services over time.”
“Opportunities for the development of a community rarely come around more than once. It’s imperative to value people, land, and resources in such a way so you build the enhancements when it’s available,” said Rev. Floyd Flake.
Residents of the Jamaica YMCA will participate in “Operation Appreciation,” a partnership of the Blue Start Families program. An initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama, The Blue Start program allows members of the community to support our military families by sending cards and letters of heartfelt thanks.
Our Youth and Young Adult service day is part of The Greater Allen Cathedral of New York’s celebration of Rev. Flake’s 35th Pastoral Anniversary and 50th Anniversary in the preaching ministry. “What better way to celebrate a man who has spent the past 35 years 'transforming a community' than by sacrificing a day of service,” says Flake’s wife and Co-Pastor, the Reverend Dr. Elaine M. Flake.
Viewers should line the parade route at 11:30 a.m. along Merrick Boulevard and 111th Avenue. Youth wishing to participate in our day of service should contact The Greater Allen Cathedral or visit the church website at www.allencathedral.org.
The Greater Allen Cathedral would like to thank the sponsors who believe the “Legacy must continue:” Jet Blue Airways, The Benjamin Companies, Con Edison and D& F Development. School Supplies for the Back to School Drive were donated by the Nora F. Taylor Missionary Society and Smart Kidz University Daycare.
It is the mission of The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York to affectively minister the word of God to the people of God through biblical teaching, preaching and outreach.
