The Gazette, Southern Maryland Newspapers Win Newspaper of the Year Awards
Gaithersburg, MD, September 18, 2011 --(PR.com)-- In their best showing ever in the Newspaper of the Year Awards of Suburban Newspapers of America, The Gazette and its sister company, Southern Maryland Newspapers, took three of the top four honors for non-daily newspapers.
First place awards included The Gazette’s Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village/Germantown edition, circulation over 37,500, The Gazette’s Frederick edition, circulation of 22,501 to 37,500, and Southern Maryland Newspaper’s Enterprise of St. Mary’s County, circulation of 10,001 to 22,500.
The Prince George’s Gazette’s Clinton/Fort Washington edition and Southern Maryland’s Maryland Independent serving Charles County won second and third places, respectively.
Other first place winners among SNA newspapers included: Lake Country Reporter in Hartland, WI, non-daily circulation under 10,000, the Arizona Daily Star of Tucson, AZ, daily circulation above 30,000 and the Galveston County Daily News in Texas, dailies under 30,000 circulation.
The judging by Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, involved hundreds of newspapers from across the country and focused on the quality of the editorial coverage, graphic design and presentation, advertising layouts and creativity and innovation.
Chuck Lyons, chief executive officer of the newspapers, commented, “What a great moment of recognition for all of our folks who work so diligently at publishing quality community newspapers.”
“We all know the challenges out there – a lousy economy, head-spinning changes in technology and competition unlike any in the past,” said Lyons. “To achieve our best showing ever in the Newspaper of the Year awards in these times helps to validate that we are doing good work that matters.”
The Gazette and Southern Maryland Newspapers are part of a community and military newspaper group owned by The Washington Post Company that also includes the Fairfax County Times, The Gazette of Politics and Business, Comprint Military Publications and Comprint Printing. The newspapers have a combined circulation of 830,000, plus websites including Gazette.Net, SoMdNews.Com, FairfaxTimes.com and dcmilitary.com.
