University Scholarship Programme Launched to Support Orphans in Kenya
The First Group Partners with Hanne Howard Fund to Create Life-Changing Opportunities and "Break the Cycle of Poverty"
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, September 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- A leading Dubai property developer has joined forces with the Hanne Howard Fund to launch a university scholarship programme aimed at creating learning opportunities for orphans in Lenana, Kenya.
The Hanne Howard Fund was set-up in 2006 to provide housing and education to more than 60 orphaned children, who lost their parents to HIV and AIDS. But as the children grew older and progressed through school, there was no funding available for university education.
But now, The First Group is funding "The First Group University Scholarship" to allow aspiring students to continue their education.
The First Group Joint Chairman Gary Shepherd recently spent time in Lenana and was instantly struck by the good work that was being done.
“When we met Hanne Howard and Ted Horton, we were instantly inspired to help in any way we could,” said Shepherd. “It was very clear that the Hanne Howard Fund was having a profound impact on the lives of so many children, but they needed that extra help to ensure that the students’ potential could be realised.”
Three students will graduate from high school this year, with 16 students set to graduate in 2012. The most successful students will be awarded The First Group University Scholarship to allow them to continue their education for a further three years.
Danny Lubert, The First Group Joint Chairman, added: “We are delighted to launch The First Group University Scholarship Programme and look forward to seeing the students graduate and go on to enjoy great success in their lives and careers.”
“We believe that educated, nourished, nurtured and healthy children are empowered,” said Hanne Howard. “This generous donation from The First Group chairmen Gary Shepherd and Danny Lubert will help to empower the children and present them with their best chance to break the cycle of poverty.”
“We believe that education gives children the necessary tools to make the best choices for their futures,” she added.
