"Removing the Mask" Domestic Violence Awareness Gala Opens Its Doors in Atlanta for a Worthy Cause
October 29th 2011 Masquerade Event Aims to Empower, Raise Funds and Awareness in Georgia
Atlanta, GA, September 23, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Community Physician Dr. Maiysha Clairborne MD, (http://www.mbswellness.org/), announced the inaugural event, the "Removing the Mask" Domestic Violence Awareness Masquerade Party to take place in Atlanta, Georgia October 29th 2011 at The Defoors Center Art Gallery. This event will bring together communities, health professionals, and advocate in support of bringing an end to domestic abuse. This masquerade-themed evening is open to the public, and will feature live music, dancing, spoken word performances, food and cocktails. A fundraising goal of $50,000 has been set for the evening with a hearty portion of proceeds raised to directly benefit The Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence (GCADV). Tickets for the upcoming gala can be purchased for $50 at www.removingthemask.org, or at the door on October 29th for an increased rate of $75.
“Georgia is 6th in the nation for domestic violence homicides of women by men. This is an issue that must be dealt with,” stated Dr. Maiysha Clairborne who is also a child survivor of domestic violence. “I am committed that the community gets the seriousness of the issue here. Domestic Violence is more than just a family tragedy, it's a public health and safety issue. Over 127 women were killed last year alone, and those numbers are growing. This event will empower the community and connect them to the resource that can help, the GCADV. It is time that we remove the mask on domestic violence; it is not ok in any way, shape or form.”
The evening is expected to be a full night, including possible attendance from Mayor Kasim Reed, and a special guest who will tell her story of survival of domestic violence. The evening will also provide attendees an opportunity to participate in a silent auction to benefit the cause. Winning bidders will walk away with luxurious items such as exclusive hotel stays, getaways trips, jewelry, art, electronics, and other unique products. Dr. Clairborne has rallied major support from the community which includes sponsorship from Cheryl Allen Events, Mogul Media Solutions, The Everest Institute in Atlanta, and Divas In Defense. She has also gained the support of CW's Focus Atlanta, and major radio stations Praise 102.5, MajicATL 107.5/97.5, and HotSpotAtl 107.9.
Dr. Clairborne serves as a board member of the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence (GCADV) which is a statewide non-profit organization that brings together member agencies, allied organizations and supportive individuals who are committed to ending domestic violence. Guided by the voices of survivors, they work to educate and create social change by addressing the root causes of domestic violence. GCADV leads advocacy efforts for responsive public policy and foster quality, comprehensive prevention and intervention services throughout the state.
