SBM's 5th Annual Back-to-School Backpack Program Earns an A+ with Employees
McClellan, CA, September 28, 2011 --(PR.com)-- In preparation for the 2011-2012 school year, SBM’s 5th annual Back-to-School Backpack Program successfully delivered 5,372 backpacks filled with grade specific school supplies to its employees’ children and grandchildren entering grades K-8.
Since its inception in 2007, the Back-to-School Backpack Program has grown by more than 300 percent and is now observed at all SBM-serviced sites across the United States, Canada and Latin America as an important component of SBM’s Social Responsibility Program.
“The Backpack Program eliminates a huge expense for thousands of employees. It feels comforting to know that an employer is willing to remove financial burdens from their employees’ lives, especially in economic times like these. It feels great to be a part of a company that truly values their employees like SBM does,” said Administrative Assistant Maria Castaneda, who oversaw the ordering of her division’s backpacks and supplies.
While some SBM sites distribute the supply-filled backpacks directly to employees, others use the Back-to-School Program as a cornerstone of their annual team events such as family-friendly barbeques, picnics and luncheons. At these events, employees’ eager children and grandchildren receive their new backpacks while celebrating the back-to-school season with the SBM team.
“It is so important that a company recognizes its employees with initiatives like the Back-to-School Backpack Program. It reaches not only our staff members, but their families as well, which helps to build a family-feel at SBM,” said Division Manager Matt Crews, whose division distributed 462 backpacks throughout Northern California.
This year SBM teamed with a single vendor to streamline the program through online ordering and direct delivery to each site. This strategic partnership has resulted in cost reductions, a simplified process and product quality improvements, which, according to Human Resources Development Manager and program coordinator, Maureen Sterling, “was a huge win for everybody.”
Each year, Sterling looks forward to the opportunity to give back to SBM’s employees and particularly appreciates the component of the Back-to-School Program that encourages students to express why school is important to them in written or artistic form.
“I especially enjoy receiving the children’s essays and pictures, as well as the feedback we get from our employees about how we impact their lives. It’s very rewarding,” Sterling said.
