OpenIndiana, the Open Source Project Sponsored by Managed Hosting Provider EveryCity, Launches Its Next Development Release, oi_151a
EveryCity is supporting OpenIndiana, an open source enterprise operating system derived from OpenSolaris.
London, United Kingdom, September 30, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Today, just over a year after its launch, the OpenIndiana project announced its next development release. OpenIndiana build 151a is now available for 32 and 64-bit x86 systems.
The OpenIndiana project was created on September 14th, 2010, spearheaded by Alasdair Lumsden, the CEO of managed hosting provider EveryCity, and EveryCity have committed to providing sponsorship by way of bandwidth and hosting capacity on their cloud platform, relieving one of the greatest cost burdens for the project, which was created to fill the gap left by the withdrawal of OpenSolaris from the market earlier last year.
“OpenIndiana's latest release is a significant milestone for the project, and represents a year of intensive hard work by our developers. OpenIndiana is now powered at its core by illumos, delivering with it significant enhancements such as KVM, the Kernel Mode Virtualisation software.” (Alasdair Lumsden, CEO of EveryCity and OpenIndiana project lead).
The latest build brings a wide variety of enhancements and new features, including a wealth of new software via the Spec Files Extra project (SFE). This includes Mplayer, VLC, FFMpeg, Postgres 9.0, mpd, Blender, Inkscape and others.
This release is also the foundation for the forthcoming first stable release of OpenIndiana, which will feature regular security and bug fixes provided free of charge.
