Water Missions International and Samaritan’s Purse Provide Safe Water in Guatemala
Project Will Give Relief to Thousands of Hurricane Stan Survivors.
Charleston, SC, October 20, 2005 --(PR.com)-- Water Missions International (WMI) engineer George Greene IV will travel to Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala to install a Living Water™ Treatment System (LWTS™) and evaluate local water resources. Santiago Atitlan has become a temporary home for at least 3,000 people from villages destroyed by flooding and mudslides in the wake of Hurricane Stan.
An estimated 1,500 people in Guatemala are dead or missing, with 140,000 living in temporary shelters. Doctors fear that overcrowding and contaminated water supplies will lead to disease outbreaks.
“The worst problem now is the risk of epidemics,” Alfonso Verdu, coordinator of Doctors Without Borders in Guatemala, said. He said doctors have seen dozens of cases of diarrhea among survivors as well as dysentery, and hepatitis A - all waterborne diseases that could be prevented with clean, safe water.
Samaritan’s Purse is providing funding and additional resources for this project. Samaritan’s Purse and WMI have worked together to provide relief in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Afghanistan, El Salvador, Eritrea, and Grenada.
