DLR Group to Design Space Control Unit at FE Warren Air Force Base
Denver, CO, October 11, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Colorado architecture firm DLR Group has been selected to renovate a nearly century-old historical building to accommodate a Space Control unit on the FE Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
DLR Group has been awarded a unique opportunity to design a renovation project while being true to a building’s historical context, complying with the military’s requirements for anti-terrorism/force protection, and meeting the energy efficiency and sustainability requirements to achieve LEED Silver.
“Sustainability is more than just green technologies and energy efficiency, it is also about reducing the need for new construction by making the most out of what currently exists while preserving the cultural significance of a building and its surrdoundings. With this project, we really get to do both,” says Tom Kapels, the project’s design manager who has also served ten years in the military.
The building’s exterior will be restored compliant to the historical district in which it exists, while the interior will be renovated to meet current building codes and the functional requirements of the new unit which it will serve. In addition, the buildings mechanical system will be replaced with a new efficient ground-loop fed HVAC system.
The project is expected to begin design in November with construction beginning in the spring of 2012.
The design team consists of DLR Group, Pappas & Pappas Architects, Martin/Martin Wyoming, and MKK Consulting Engineers, Inc. The project is a design-build delivery teamed with Bryan Construction out of Fort Collins, Colorado.
