Acres of Land Winery Takes Five Medals in Southern Wine Competition
As wine competition season draws to a close, Acres of Land Winery in Kentucky scored five medals for five wines entered in the next to the last wine competition of the year.
Lexington, KY, October 14, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Acres of Land Winery in Richmond, Kentucky has been awarded five medals, one for each wine entered in the Wines of the South Competition held the first of October in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Acres of Land’s Vignoles wine scored gold in the competition, one of only 25 gold medals given. Acres of Land’s new vintage of Marie’s Merlot won a silver. Three bronze medals were awarded to Acres for its new vintage Cabernet, sweet Concord, and Willie Mae’s Blackberry dessert wine.
The Colonel’s Ridge Cabernet and Marie’s Merlot are the first two select barrel blended vintages crafted by Acres of Land’s new winemaker, Brian Neighbors. Neighbors, a former winemaker and winery owner from Illinois, has been awarded over 350 medals from national and international competitions during the past ten years.
When told of the medals, Neighbors said, “It’s wonderful to see my first two wines for Acres of Land garner medals. Now we’ll work to keep that momentum going.”
Over 400 wines were entered in the competition. Only seven wines received Best of Show status. Fifteen concordance golds were awarded along with 25 gold medals, 125 silvers, and over 120 bronze medals. Twenty-five southern judges took part and judged blind flights of wines according to grape varietals.
Wines of the South is in its tenth year. It is an annual competition open only to commercial wineries located in fourteen southern states. Winning wines will be displayed next weekend, October 21 and 22, at the annual Tennessee Food and Wine Show held at the Knoxville, Tennessee Convention Center.
Acres of Land Winery is owned by Lowell and Katherine Land and located on the family farm in Richmond, Kentucky. For more information, please visit the website at http://www.acresoflandwinery.com/index.asp
