A Liberated, 83 Year Old Woman… and Wife: My Annie Published by Outskirts Press
Douglas Richie pays pre-eminent tribute to sixty-two years of successful marriage to a remarkable woman who has been the mother of four, a career nurse, an intrepid solo world traveler and a successful real estate investor and property manager.
Carlsbad, CA, October 15, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Douglas Richie announced today the release of My Annie, The True Life Story of a Liberated Woman Written by her Husband, published by Outskirts Press. Richie’s impressive tribute to his wife emphasizes her life as a true maverick: always mustering the courage she needed, always unwilling to accept defeat, and always with an undying faith fully intact in her ability to succeed.
Annie’s life did not start off from a bed of roses. She was physically and emotionally abused, she had to overcome a learning disability, she had very poor coordination and -- worse yet in her mind -- she had to compete in the same grade in school with a younger sister who excelled in everything. She took summer jobs that no one else would ever have considered just so she could get away from her unhappy home life.
After college she worked as a public health nurse and a school nurse, where she taught high school girls to be nurse’s aides and where she earned an outstanding award from the Southern California Industry Education Council. Her second career included the purchase and management of income properties and in her third career, but by no means her least important one, she successfully raised four children who each graduated from college and embarked on their own successful careers.
In 1963 she and her husband flew to Korea to adopt two handicapped orphans. When she was fifty she travelled alone for four months in the South Pacific volunteering for school and public health agencies. She served in the Australian Outback, on the remote islands of Fiji and, despite having no knowledge of the French language, throughout French Polynesia.
When she returned, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which in typical Annie-like stride she overcame after surgery. She then commuted from Long Beach to Palm Springs forty-five weekends a year to run a forty-one unit motel… while she was still working full time as a school nurse.
Richie’s paean to this remarkable woman not only acknowledges her unique strengths, it also attests to the fact that behind such a liberated woman there is often an equally remarkable man.
