Status Solutions Features Innovative Communication Technology at LeadingAge Annual Meeting and IAHSA Global Aging Conference

Information technology intimidates seniors, and research indicates that 55 percent of those 65 and older don’t own or won’t use a PC, according to MacLeod. “Seniors are afraid of computer keyboards, but they have no problem looking at screens – like those on their TVs – or punching buttons,” he says. “CATIE keeps seniors informed, engaged, active and in touch with those who matter most, preventing a sense of isolation and improving the quality of their lives.”

Charlottesville, VA, October 14, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Status Solutions, provider of the Situational Awareness and Response Assistant (SARA), will feature its latest innovation – CATIE, at next week’s LeadingAge 2011 Annual Meeting and IAHSA Global Aging Conference in Washington, DC, in booth 2321.

His mom’s necessity was also the mother of his company’s latest invention. Mike MacLeod, CEO of Status Solutions, developed the CATIE (Communication and Access to Information Everywhere) solution to bridge the communication gap between seniors and the tech-savvy generations following them.

Like many seniors, MacLeod’s mother, 84, didn’t have access to email. When her 21-year-old granddaughter returned from a trip to Europe, she couldn’t view the photos. The two would have to wait months for a face-to-face visit before they could share the experience. “I wanted to close the digital distance between the generations in my family,” MacLeod explains. So the idea for CATIE was born, and now the solution promises to enhance the daily lives of those living in senior communities all across the country.

The first technology of its kind, CATIE enables two-way communication, functioning as an intercom, message center, electronic bulletin board and concierge. The interactive, multimedia device delivers information through a simple touch screen senior friendly interface. Anyone with a CATIE in-room, self-standing kiosk or portable tablet can connect with their families, friends and fellow residents as well as reach out to service providers inside and outside their senior living community.

Jeff Hutchins, CEO of Penick Village located in Southern Pines, NC, couldn’t agree with MacLeod’s premise more. “Information gives people power – power that includes the opportunity to be engaged and knowledgeable. And with knowledge comes choice. Frequently when someone is aging, they feel that they are losing control of making choices in their lives. We believe CATIE will provide the information to help folks maintain or enhance their control and make those choices,” states Hutchins. Penick Village is an early adopter of the CATIE solution and is currently deploying the unique communication tool across their continuing care retirement community. Hutchins feels strongly that, “The key to quality care and quality of life is communication.”

With the over-60 population expected to grow to 55 million in 2020 – and live longer – CATIE has the potential to significantly enhance both life quality and life safety for this demographic. “Status Solutions’ business model is based on producing positive societal impacts,” MacLeod notes. “Overcoming the digital divide so seniors stay connected to the world around them matters, and that’s what we do – things that matter.”
