Formic Media Makes Donation to Help Increase Literacy in Children

Portland, OR, October 17, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Formic Media, Inc., a search engine and social media marketing agency, announced that it would be making a $500 donation to SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), a local charity enabling children to become more confident readers through volunteer support, as well as the purchase of children’s books which they can take home to continue learning away from the classroom.

“While Formic is already donating its time and resources to its 2011 annual Charity of Choice, the team is very proud to provide an additional cash donation to the SMART reading program,” stated Kent Lewis, President of Formic Media. “It’s a program that many team members are close to and to which we’ve already donated time to develop a social media strategy.”

Formic Media has always had a commitment to the local community it serves. When founding the company, President Kent Lewis instituted an annual Charity of Choice program where Formic donates its online marketing expertise to one charity organization for an entire year. This year’s annual Charity of Choice is the Oregon Humane Society. However, Lewis thought the company could do more, so a quarterly Charity of Choice program was created where Formic makes a cash donation. The first quarterly Charity of Choice recipient was Dining to Give, which is a dinner series that enables each dinner guest to participate in a small act of philanthropy.

The SMART reading program is celebrating 20 years, and has helped thousands of children increase their reading skills. Thousands of volunteers across Oregon donate their time to read aloud to children, which helps the kids gain confidence and reinforces their reading and learning skills in the classroom. SMART partners with more than 200 schools with high populations of low income families, as studies show they are less likely to have children’s books in their homes.
