World Overcomers Christian Church Adopts Y.E. Smith Elementary School for 2011-2012 School Year
Local Church Assists Durham, N.C., School With Classrooms And Library
Research Triangle Park, NC, October 20, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Senior Pastor Andy Thompson, founder of World Overcomers Christian Church (http://www.wocconline.org), a nondenominational church serving worshippers in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park community, has announced that the church has adopted Y.E. Smith Elementary School in Durham. During a recent week of service, church members renovated the school’s library and several classrooms, as well as donated nearly 1,600 books for students.
Congregants have also provided uniforms for students in need and will sponsor a “March Madness” event for Y.E. Smith Elementary in 2012, with all proceeds benefiting the school. In addition, church members painted walls, stained bookcases and purchased a stationary desk for the school library, now named Y.E. Smith World Overcomers Media Center. In honor of its work, World Overcomers Christian Church received a certificate of recognition from Eric Becoats, superintendent of Durham Public Schools.
Quotes:
“World Overcomers Christian Church seeks to be a blessing to the community in many ways, including meeting the needs of local school children,” said Thompson. “Previously, students at Y.E. Smith Elementary School could not check out books, simply because there were not enough to go around. I’m proud of our church members for stepping in to donate the books and uniforms that were so needed, and took time to work on upgrading the facility. We hope that these contributions will help students renew their interest in learning, and we look forward to serving the school in the future.”
“I heard a student say, ‘I didn’t even like to read, but I want to come in here and read!’” said Latisha Johnson, kindergarten teacher at Y.E. Smith Elementary School. “This renovation has been motivating, really giving them a push.”
“I was most impressed with World Overcomers Christian Church, from all the energy, effort and work that went into helping our students,” said Alice Mba, media coordinator at Y.E. Smith Elementary School. “It [the renovation] had a ‘wow’ affect on us. I loved the artwork and the colors are really inspirational.”
