Boys Booked on Barbershop
Philadelphia, PA, October 20, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Philadelphia chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc., a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering support for mothers of color, will launch the Philadelphia Area's second installment of the national literacy program, Boys Booked on Barbershops/Girls Booked on Beauty Shops at Philadelphia’s 20 year veteran hair salon, Kutz Kurlz & Bangz 404 S. 60th Street. The G-BOB/B-BOB program goal is to facilitate the ongoing practice of reading, as young men and young ladies make their regular visits to barbershops and beauty shops.
Girls Booked on Beauty Shops & Boys Booked on Barbershops is a national, cutting edge literacy program designed to make the most of naturally occurring opportunities for children to read in familiar neighborhood sites such as barbershops and beauty shops. Philadelphia Mocha Moms, one chapter of the national organization, chose the veteran hair salon, Girls Booked on Beauty Shops to launch the unique program because of Glenda’s 20+ year commitment to the hair care industry. "With this partnership, we hope to inspire in some a life-long appreciation of books and therefore knowledge," say chapter officers. " Kutz Kurlz & Bangz was chosen, not just because of its longevity, but because they are a unisex hair care establishment. Intended as a reading nook, the installment features a bookshelf with a wide variety of books designed to spark the interest of young boys and girls. There are plans underway for a 2012 expansion to Philadelphia’s Historic Smith Memorial Playground as well.
Since 2002, The Philadelphia Chapter of Mocha Moms has provided a support network for mothers of color that face difficult choices regarding the balance of home and work. Mocha Moms, be they stay-at-home parents, students or entrepreneurs- are supported through regular meetings in addition to networking and information sharing opportunities and annual conferences.
