Walk for Tourette Syndrome is a Step in the Right Direction
Register now for second annual event and take a stand against stigma.
Mendham, NJ, October 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- It’s about making a statement and showing support to the 28,000 New Jersey children and families living with Tourette Syndrome (TS) - a neurological disorder. Teams are forming from across the state to take part in the 2nd annual New Jersey Walks for TS event in Mendham on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Borough Park in Mendham, N.J.
“Those who come out to join us are speaking volumes through the simple act of walking,” NJCTS executive director Faith Rice said. “We would like everyone to join us and literally take steps to show support for our message of self-advocacy.”
This event started as a youth-based grassroots movement, teens with the desire to show their peers with TS that they care. Today, kids of all ages are urged to sign-up for the walk at www.active.com/donate/MendhamWalksforTS.
Tourette Syndrome is an inherited neurological disorder seen in as many as 1 in 100 children according to the Center for Disease Control. It’s characterized by uncontrollable motor or vocal movements known as tics and is frequently accompanied by other disorders including ADHD, OCD, learning disabilities, depression, anxiety and sleep problems. TS is a spectrum disorder which ranges from very severe to mild. It usually appears when a child is 6 or 7 years old. It affects all races and ethnic groups. There is no cure for Tourette Syndrome but early diagnosis and support are critical in dealing with this disorder.
Kids can gather their families, friends and classmates to form walking and fundraising teams. For more information about the Center or to volunteer for the walk, please call 908-575-7350. Proceeds to benefit the NJ Center for Tourette Syndrome.
