dysFUNctional Art on Display at Erie Art Museum

Erie, PA, November 25, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Erie Art Museum is hosting dysFUNctional, a showcase of juried mixed media works in an eclectic group of original and unconventional sculptural pieces, on display in the Main Gallery through December 30, 2011.

Wood Turning Center’s Exhibition Committee chose jurors Cecilia Baker, Marsha Moss, Richard Torchia and Ricardo Viera, architects, designers and curators from outside the wood turning field to judge the submitted works. The jurors sought out and selected work that could plausibly originate from any contemporary arts organization, not specifically objects that were wood or lathe-based. Some lathe-turned wood objects are included, alongside works incorporating other processes, or alluding to turning and/or wood.

The exhibit showcases art that subverts or satirizes function. Jurors selected works that are offbeat, amusing and surprising to visitors. They looked for intense experiences of color, original uses of materials and tools, kinetic pieces, and works with auditory elements, such as musical instruments. Video and performance pieces were eligible, alongside collaborations between artists. The result is an exhibit that expects visitors to encounter the unexpected and the entertaining.

dysFUNctional includes works from thirty international artists. The exhibit features a wide variety of forms, from traditional functions—chairs, chests, or other furniture—with an artistic twist to abstract objects with little or no functional resemblance.
