SMH Honors Two Outstanding Physicians, Installs New Physician Leaders
Sarasota, FL, November 02, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Sarasota Memorial’s medical staff recently installed its new leaders for 2012 and honored two outstanding physicians for service to the hospital and community.
John J. Collins, MD, was selected as Sarasota Memorial’s new chief of staff. He will serve as the top representative of Sarasota Memorial’s 800+ physicians through Oct. 31, 2012. Among other responsibilities, Dr. Collins will work with hospital administrators on quality initiatives and help manage matters of mutual concern involving care of patients in the hospital.
In an unusual coincidence, he also was named Sarasota Memorial’s 2011 Physician of the Year.
Dr. Collins served as chairman elect and chairman of Sarasota Memorial’s Medicine Department from 2009 to 2011. His practice was one of the earliest adopters of an electronic medical records system, and he has been instrumental in helping Sarasota Memorial develop an electronic health information exchange between physicians in the community and the hospital. He also has served the past two years on the hospital’s Health Care Reform Task Force.
Dr. Collins earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 1996 and completed a MedPeds residency at the University of Texas, Houston. He is board certified in Pediatrics by the American Academy of Pediatrics and board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Collins is an Assistant Professor at Florida State University.
His hobbies include fishing, boating, and computer technology. He is active with the Boy Scouts and also is an Eagle Scout.
The medical staff appointed Sarasota oncologist Richard H. Brown, MD, as Chief of Staff-elect for the upcoming year. As chief of staff-elect, Dr. Brown will assume all duties in the chief of staff’s absence, serve on the hospital’s Medical Executive Committee and co-chair the hospital’s Medical Staff Quality Improvement Committee, among other hospital initiatives. He will assume the role of Chief of Staff during the next administrative year beginning Nov. 1, 2012.

Sarasota Memorial’s medical staff also announced the recipient of its 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award. Thoracic & General Surgeon Richard W. Hoefer, MD, was recognized as Sarasota Memorial’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award.
A native of Ohio, Dr. Hoefer has been a member of Sarasota Memorial’s medical staff since 1974. He played an instrumental role in the development of the hospital’s thoracic/lung surgery program, and has provided invaluable leadership to the health system, serving as chief of staff in 1988 and as an exceptional mentor for Sarasota Memorial’s thoracic surgeons.
Sarasota Memorial’s Physician of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards are bestowed annually. Recipients are nominated by their peers and selected by a committee of physician leaders.
