New Hires at San Diego Surfrider Chapter Enable "Engaged Activism"
With an eye towards engaging more volunteers and activists, the Surfrider Foundation added two new staff positions to the San Diego Chapter earlier this year, and has seen an immense amount of growth during that time. "Engaged activism" is our goal says Sarah Adams, Chapter Chair. San Diego, CA, November 03, 2011 --(PR.com)-- San Diego Chapter of Surfrider Foundation Continues to Grow: "Engaged Activism" is Goal for Grassroots Organization.
With an eye towards engaging more volunteers and activists, the Surfrider Foundation added two new staff positions to the San Diego Chapter earlier this year, and has seen an immense amount of growth during that time.
"'Engaged activism' is our goal," says Sarah Adams, Chapter Chair. "We are looking to help our grassroots members engage in defending and conserving our coastal environments in as many ways as possible. Our long-time employee handling these responsibilities accepted a new position at Surfrider's global headquarters in San Clemente, so we decided we could better benefit our members and coastal environment with two new positions: a Chapter Coordinator and a Campaign Coordinator."
For the Chapter Coordinator role, Haley Haggerstone, a longtime Surfrider activist and Executive Committee member of the organization's Vancouver Chapter was hired. Haley holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of British Columbia in Natural Resource Conservation, and is working towards a Masters of Arts degree in Nonprofit Management and Leadership at the University of San Diego. Haley's fundraising experience, volunteer recruitment and project management skills, along with her energy and enthusiasm has already paid dividends, as demonstrated by her success overseeing the most recent chapter Art Gala and Paddle for Clean Water, appearance at the Stone Brewing Company's 15th Anniversary, and the launch of the new chapter website.
The chapter also created a new Campaign Coordinator position, and hired the former General Manager of Surfrider Australia, Julia Chunn-Heer. Julia is a native of San Diego and worked in Australia on several campaigns, helping local activists win several big victories for their coastlines. Julia previously served as the chair of the San Diego Surfrider Chapter, and worked on the staff at Coast Law Group in Encinitas. Her experience and contacts in California make Julia a natural fit for the chapter's Campaign Coordinator position, and she has been invaluable in representing the chapter at city council meetings and offering comments on various policy documents pertaining to Surfrider's mission.
"Like everything at Surfrider, this was a very strategic, logical next step for the chapter," says Sarah Adams. "We have experienced significant growth since our win at Trestles, and managing all our volunteers and activists on our issue campaigns and programs will help us garner more victories for beaches and the environment."
Haley and Julia are expected to help the chapter achieve more environmental wins for San Diego's coast by training Surfrider members to become coastal activists. "Anyone who cares about our county's oceans, waves and beaches should get involved with Surfrider," says Julia. "We are excited to see how many people we can empower to take a stand on coastal issues which matter to them, and who can support our vision for healthy coasts." Haley enthusiastically agrees and adds, "Volunteering with Surfrider is a great way to build a resume, give back to your local community, meet new people, and have fun doing it!"
