Celebrate The Fiber Arts!
A fine craft gallery devoted exclusively to the fiber arts opened on October 1, 2005.
Mount Vernon, OH, October 23, 2005 --(PR.com)-- The world has fallen in love with the fiber arts! Everyone is learning to knit. The “boho-chic” look is the perfect excuse to crochet a scarf using beautiful yarns with wonderful textures. Many newcomers to the fiber arts are discovering that while fine craftsmanship does not come easily, an appreciation for it is almost immediate. “People want quality in their lives,” says professional weaver and local yarn shop owner Deborah Yorde, “and there are not that many places to find it.” This observation and the desire to promote the fiber arts was the genesis for opening a gallery to showcase and sell fiber art.
Yorde envisioned a place where you walk through the door and see textiles everywhere – beautiful colors and sumptuous textures. “As you move farther into the space, you see a dining table with hand-woven linens, a felted bowl and an amazing quilt hanging on the wall. Then imagine that you come upon a rack of wonderful garments- quilted, knitted and woven – that would make you feel special any time you wore them.” Yorde’s vision expanded beyond providing a visually exciting and tactile environment for artists to sell their work. She wanted to include elements of education,
promotion and support for fellow fiber artists.
So Yorde and five other women fiber artist partners, drawn together by a common bond and passion, opened a new gallery in Mt. Vernon, Ohio that will showcase and sell fiber art. In a unique gallery business model, the owners are providing other fiber artists a retail venue to sell work on consignment and an opportunity to work in and learn the daily operations of a gallery. Periodically, Fibers Gallery Ltd. will feature nationally-known and award-winning fiber artists’ work in a “Visiting Artist” program.
The gallery will carry work that encompasses all facets of the fiber arts, including; knitted, woven and crocheted apparel and home furnishings, hand-painted silk scarves, felted handbags, chain mail jewelry, handmade paper art journals and books, quilts, crochet/semi-precious stone jewelry, children’s hats, traditional rag rugs, mohair rabbits and bears and quilted/ embroidered wall hangings.
The gallery’s soft opening was Saturday, October 1, 2005. The official “Gallery Opening” event is Saturday, October 22, 2005. It is located just north of the town square in a block dubbed “The Very Short North” in reference to Columbus’s Short North arts district. Within that short block are nestled another gallery - North Main Gallery, which features fine art and other media, a new restaurant and Mt. Vernon’s venerable handcraft landmark, Down Home Leather.
