Australia Reports an Increase in Skilled Stream Visa Grants in 2010-11

The Australian Government has issued a greater number of skilled stream visa grants in the 2010-11 financial year, according to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship’s Annual Report.

London, United Kingdom, November 06, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Australia awarded 113,725 skilled migration visas in 2010-11, up from 107,868 in 2009-10, representing a 5.6% increase.

The increase can be accounted for by changes in immigration policy due to changing country circumstances, says Australian Visa Bureau Managing Director Guy Bradley.

“The percentage increase in the award of skilled stream visa grants to Australia in 2010-11 is the result of a deliberate decision by the Australian Government to increase the intake from the previous year,” Mr Bradley said.

“In 2009-10, the number of skill stream visas fell to 107,868 from 115,000 due to a cautious approach taken by the Australian Government in response to the global economic crisis.

“As Australia emerged from the worst of the global recession in better shape than any other developed nation, it has returned its skilled migration to previous levels.

“The percentage increase revealed in the Annual Report therefore suggests that the decrease in visa grants in 2009-10 was a temporary aberration based on global economic circumstances rather than a change in long-term immigration policy direction.

“It seems the Australian Government’s commitment to economic migration remains strong.”

Skilled stream visa grants made up 67.5 per cent of total Migration Program grants, indicating the central role of the skilled stream within the Australia visa system.
